Here is an interesting article by Vishnuvardhan working at Sun Microsystems in Bangalore, India. We often see semantic analysis done by strategy and process consultants but not usually from the developers working on implementing these solutions. From Vishnu’s blog,
Understanding HL7 V3 specification is a difficult task for the developers who worked on HL7 v2 messages. The HL7 V3 specification is different in many ways from V2. I have gathered all the information required for transmitting HL7 V3 messages from the V3 specification documents and here I will give a general overview of different elements of V3 and constructing the V3 message that can be exchanged with other compatible systems.

Out of The Netherlands, Albert D.G. de Roos has an interesting blog about the issues that can arise when government places its faith in a single standards organization, like HL7. He also argues that the HL7 community tends toward isolation and is practically immune from outside criticism since most practitioners are also active members. de Roos writes, “Consultancy through HL7 is only possible for its active members that participate in the technical committees, making independent feed-back from the field virtually impossible.” Continue reading »

Thomas Canter spells out his wish list for the BizTalk Server HL7 Accelerator 3.0 on his blog, Get on the Bus. I’m not very familiar with BizTalk, but I do agree that this is good advice for any software vendor undertaking an HL7 product. From Canter’s blog:
“The overall impact of the non-compliant behavior is that the HL7 accelerator places a tremendous implementation burden on the implementer. Instead of concerning themselves with values of interest in the message, they spend a tremendous amount of time matching the current system requirements to the HL7 Accelerator defined specification. This increases the implementation time, reduces the flexibility of the solution and in general, makes any BizTalk solution extremely expensive.” Continue Reading…

MacPractice, the software for physicians, dentists, chiropractors and optometrists, now features a Health Level 7 (HL7) messaging interface. The 2.2.14 update sports the new feature. The new update enables medical practices that use MacPractice to communicate with other services that utilize the HL7 industry standard — commonly employed at clinical labs, used by Electronic Medical Record (EMR) services, third-party medical and dental imaging software and more.
