New topic: “Help with HL7 v2.7 - MSH-18 (character set)” by sdrolia

I would really appreciate if someone could help me with the following questions:

- HL7 v2.6 specification mentions that one can specify a different character set in MSH-18 field for the whole message. Say I want to use GB 18080-2000 character set (Chinese) for my HL7 messages. Based on this, is it safe to assume that by default all fields in MSH-0 to MSH-17 will be in ASCII encoded? If not, then it becomes a chicken and egg problem. If the full message is encoded using GB 18080-2000, then I don\'t know this information till field 18 in MSH. And I cannot parse field 18 properly because I don\'t know the encoding type before that. How I do overcome this problem?

Some direction would be helpful. Thanks!

HL7 v2.3 Standard
================

If I include PRD segment with ORU^R01 message, will it be compliant with the HL7 standard?

Details:

Need to send transcription text as part of ORU R01 messages to the referring physicians. I need to have referring physician\'s contact info. like name, phone, fax etc. as part of the message.

If I include the PRD segment as part of ORM R01 message will it be a non-standard HL7 message?

Thanks in advance!

It is? I know the provider is available for lab results and things of that nature, but we are using all the available physicians (referring, attending, consulting, primary, etc.) and there only seems to be room for the one telephone number. I\'ll look into the PRD section in the morning.

We are attempting to do some customization of the output of the Meditech admissions module and would rather send over as little as possible on z-segments, for obvious reasons. Thank for your help. I\'ll post a follow up tomorrow.

Matt, My experience with Biztalk was that it is too slow. The number of messages it can process per second is very low. A very rough estimate is 8 to 13 messages per second is what it can process. Again this is an estimate but based on validation rules and schema your 11 msg/sec may go down further. In our case we roughly found out about 2 msg/sec. So make sure you ask Microsoft this question before you go too much deep into this product.

I\'ve read about the Accelerator for HL7 and I\'m curious about any experience you\'ve had with this. Did this adapter help; did it speed up implementation?
